World knowledge in children's and young adult non-fiction books from five centuries

Non-fiction books for children and young people invite their readers to immerse themselves in all areas of knowledge. They convey the most diverse knowledge from technology, physics or the biology of animals and plants. They show the everyday life of children in the country and in the city, deal with geography, ethnology, the history of the earth and mankind, astronomy, discoveries, inventions, music, curiosities and more. The exhibition presents a "cabinet of knowledge". Rare historical non-fiction books from Werner Ziesel's recently acquired collection of historical children's and young adult books are contrasted with current non-fiction books.

Non-fiction books have always been a mirror of the political, religious and social ideas of a time or educational class. Time-bound is not only the respective state of research, but also the aesthetics and social values that are implicitly conveyed through the selection and presentation of knowledge. The exhibition takes a look at the transmission and appropriation of world knowledge from the 18th to the 21st century, with a focus on nature and living creatures of the earth, and makes  it possible to experience the changing forms of mediation for knowledge.

The opening of the exhibition will take place on 24 May 2022 at 7 pm in German language.

Workshops for school classes will be offered to accompany the exhibition.
