Reading for school classes

"Kanak Kids" by Anna Dimitrova

Jella-Lepman-Saal

Sixteen-year-old Dessi leads a double life: In Munich's hotspot district of Neuperlach, she plays the foreigner with jogging bottoms and "Alman" jokes; at the inner-city high school, Daisy wears a blonde wig, blue contact lenses and speaks High German. She keeps her friend groups separated from each other. She would rather try to fit in everywhere than make herself vulnerable. The tactic works - until one day she is caught by Bo during her transformation. Bo is not only Dessi's neighbour, but also her classmate and therefore the only person who knows both of her personalities. Can Dessi convince him to keep quiet? Or will her two worlds collide for good?

Screenwriter Anna Dimitrova was born in Bulgaria and lives in Munich. She deals with the daily culture clash in a very comedic way and, in Kanak Kids, processes her own intercultural experiences. Humorous, entertaining and with an almost cinematic dynamic, she tells of the protagonist's inner turmoil, of the highs and lows of living interculturality, of friendship, of self-images and images of others. At the International Youth Library, Anna Dimitrova not only presents her book, but also invites her young audience to engage in dialogue with her.
