Binette Schroeder (born 1939), a multiple award-winning illustrator and graphic artist, initially left her artistic legacy to the International Youth Library as a deposit. The estate contains various stages of her work, drafts, sketches and elaborate illustrations of her picture books, such as "Lupinchen", "Laura", "Lelebum", "Der Froschkönig oder der Eiserne Heinrich", "Die Schöne und das Tier", "Archibald und sein kleines Rot", "Krokodil Krokodil", "Die Schattennähmaschine", "Die wunderbaren Reisen und Abenteuer des Freiherrn von Münchhausen", "Die Vollmondlegende", "Ritter Rüstig und Ritter Rostig", "Der Zauberling" as well as free works.
On the basis of the carefully preserved originals, the artistic process can be vividly traced. For example, the effect of different colors and techniques such as ink, pencil, pen, watercolor pencil, felt-tip pen, colored pencil, watercolor crayons, gouaches, pastels, collages, and the effect of the choice of paper on the drawing or colorfulness becomes visible.
The estate is currently being developed with funds from the Binette Schroeder Foundation for the Cultural Promotion of International Children's Book Illustration in Calliope.
