NEW: Eyes open! Ali Mitgutsch and the bustling crowd

Foyer & Wehrgang-Gallery

Ali Mitgutsch is regarded as the father of the ‘wimmelbuch’. ‘Rundherum in meiner Stadt’ ('Life in the City'), published in 1968, is his first wimmelbuch and a classic of children’s literature.

From 16 September 2026, the International Youth Library will be hosting the first comprehensive retrospective of the renowned artist’s work. Drawing from the rich collection of the artist’s estate, which is managed by Ali Mitgutsch’s sons and daughter, the exhibition will feature original works dating from his artistic beginnings in the 1950s right up to the start of the 21st century. Alongside the originals from the ‘Wimmelbücher’, the exhibition will feature paintings, drawings and sketches that have never before been on display. Together, they tell the story of an artist who was drawn to distant lands on his numerous journeys, yet remained deeply rooted in Munich and Bavaria.

Further information on the exhibition can be found via this link.
