No gripping novel, no exciting fairy tale can do without evil adversaries who teach the heroes of the stories and the readers to fear: Witches and sorcerers, robbers, pirates and tyrants, Rumpelstiltskin and the evil wolf, the ice-cold Snow Queen, the hard-hearted Scrooge or the hairy Grinch in H. C. Andersen, Charles Dickens and Dr. Seuss. Not to forget terrifying fantasy figures such as Sauron in "Lord of the Rings" and Voldemort - "the one whose name must not be spoken" - in the "Harry Potter" novels.

What role do these dazzling characters play in the stories? What do they represent? What makes them fascinating, perhaps even charming? These and other questions are explored in this exhibition with numerous examples from international children's and youth literature.
