Permanent Exhibition

Re-opening of the James Krüss Tower

The permanent exhibition, which has been completely redesigned and revised with new content, is dedicated to the life and work of James Krüss and illustrates how closely his biography was linked to his literary worlds. The focus is on five defining stages of his life – from Heligoland to Gran Canaria – which also served as the starting points for his imaginative stories and wordplay. Through documentary-fictional installations, stage sets and illustrations, visitors encounter the author at different stages of his life. The displays are complemented by photographs, quotations, poems and interactive word games on the walls. Two large panoramic panels combine biographical insights with motifs from his work, bringing Krüss’s creative storytelling to life visually. An audio guide for children and adults accompanies the exhibition on two narrative levels and invites visitors on a poetic journey through life, places and imagination.

The press say about the new exhibition:

“This lovingly curated journey through Krüss’s life and creative world is very much designed with young visitors in mind. It is complemented by an audio guide—available in versions for either children or adults—which links the key stages of Krüss’s life with quotes from his own writings or from those of his contemporaries. It is a fascinating journey, though only seven or eight people can embark on it simultaneously. After all, a tower is a bit more cramped than an island.”
Süddeutsche Zeitung, Barbara Hordych, 22 May 2026
“The exhibition in the Krüss Tower at Blutenburg Castle is a well-conceived, multi-dimensional experience – and, together with the audio guide, appeals to both children and adults on a whole range of levels. (…) But without giving too much away: even if the queue happens to be long – it’s worth the wait to immerse yourself fully in the wonderfully colourful, peaceful world of James Krüss.”
Münchner Merkur, Ulrike Frick
