"Jella Lepman's Library of Dreams"

Jella-Lepman-Hall

Jella Lepman's founding of the International Youth Library immediately after the end of the Second World War was an unusually idealistic and positive project of hope in a time of total destruction, disruption and disorientation. The founder, a Jewish woman from Stuttgart, had only escaped persecution by fleeing Germany and going into exile in London. Yet she had the ability to dare to try something new even in the greatest darkness and not to despair, but to build on hope.

Author Katherine Paterson and illustrator Sally Deng have recounted the astonishing life of Jella Lepman. The richly illustrated biography for young and adult readers is now also available in German translation and will be presented that evening.

In addition to exclusive background information from Lepman's granddaughter Claudia Logan, Sabine Bohlmann will read from the book. Footnotes will be added to the reading. You can find more information on the programme here. (The event will be held in German.)
