Storytelling – Imagination – Danger – Trick – Picture book

When you feel bored, thinking up a story is the perfect solution. Following in the footsteps of the award-winning “Open Very Carefully” (Nosy Crow, 2013), Nicola O’Byrne’s latest picture book sheds light on the mechanisms of storytelling and the power of imagination. Here, a little rabbit desperately wishes for something exciting to happen and is thrilled when a large wolf “librarian” (?!) turns up and suggests they write a story together. A story with a big baddie, and a small hero, taking place in a tree-y place, “Once upon a time…” Sounds familiar? Just in time, Rabbit realises that this (fairy)tale is heading towards disaster. Using his imagination, the little hero thwarts Wolf’s evil plans and saves the day. The uncluttered illustrations put a clear focus on the two protagonists, perfectly portraying the rabbit’s growing uneasiness and his clever escape at the end. The harmonious marriage of amusing pictures and a witty, understated text will delight readers with every turn of the page. (Age: 3+)
