Parent / Child | Role | Anecdote

A pirate girl plays checkers with a mermaid, a princess rejects the rosy world of castles and princes to become a monkey, parents let their boringly normal son get all pimped up in the children’s repair shop.

This collection of stories by Alexandra Salmela and Martina Matlovičova presents twenty-one similarly quirky, highly entertaining anecdotes. Almost all of them are about discarding a pre-set role or not embracing it in the first place. ≫Giraffe mama≪ appeared simultaneously in Slovakia and in Finland, where Bratislava-born Alexandra Salmela (b. 1980) has lived since 2006, and where she has already received praise for her debut novel. Both book editions feature Martina Matlovičova’s illustrations and reveal her to be one of the most interesting contemporary Slovakian illustrators. Her delightfully eccentric illustration style perfectly suits Salmela’s stories. (Age: 6+)
