Father / Son | Hug | Neighbourly love | Animal story

Father and son bears roam the forest and hug everyone and everything they encounter – including themselves. They hug a beaver who is irritated by it, a carrot-munching rabbit, an old elk who’s hard of hearing and even a hunter and Red Riding Hood’s Big Bad Wolf. Only the constrictor snake would rather hug than be hugged. Why this love-fest? Because afterwards everyone is better off and in a better mood!

Przemysław Wechterowicz, a much-loved picture book author in Poland, has worked with many leading Polish illustrators, including Marta Ignerska. For this vignette-based picture book, he collaborated with Emilia Dziubak (b. 1982), an illustrator who has been gaining renown since 2010. Her pictures appear sometimes cute, but nonetheless hit the mark and oft en draw on situational comedy. She illustrates this touching father-son story with a measure of wit and a dash of irony in the details. (Age: 3+)
