Co-operation project of the Munich literary institutions
Literary Week against Anti-Semitism
Taking a stand, showing solidarity, finding solutions - seven Munich literary institutions are setting an example against anti-Semitism with a joint week of events.
For many Jewish citizens in this country, fear has once again become a real part of life. The pogrom of 7 October 2023 by Hamas in Israel is a (re)traumatising experience for many of them, and a lack of solidarity is a serious reproach. Since then, the situation has deteriorated further with the progression of the war and the high number of casualties among Palestinian civilians. Legitimate criticism of the policies of the current Israeli government and anti-Semitic attitudes cannot always be clearly distinguished.
Initiated by the International Youth Library, Munich's literary and educational institutions and literary venues have joined forces to organise a week of events as a sign of solidarity with the city's Jews and against Anti-Semitism throughout Germany. They are focussing on historical events and current developments in order to raise awareness of Anti-Semitism and its significance in Germany.
In the ‘Literary Week against Anti-Semitism’, the focus will not be on the conflict in the Middle East - but on Jewish life in this city and Anti-Semitism in Germany that is making its way from the right and left into the centre of society.
A cooperation between the Cultural Centre of the Jewish Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria, the Monacensia at the Hildebrandhaus, the Munich Adult Education Centre, the NS Documentation Centre, the International Youth Library Foundation, the Munich Literature House Foundation and the Poetry Cabinet Foundation.
The ‘Literary Week against Anti-Semitism’ is sponsored by the City of Munich (Department of Culture) and the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts.
-- The closing event ‘Brief in der Nacht - Chaja Pollak & Iris Berben’ has been postponed and will take place on Friday, 24 January 2025 at 7 pm in the Literaturhaus. --
