Performance

Banned, persecuted, remembered. An event by young people in commemoration of the National Socialist book burning of 1933

NS-Dokumentationszentrum Munich

11 May, time to be announced

When books were burned in Berlin on 10 May 1933, Erich Kästner stood in the crowd and watched as people threw piles of his books into the fire. Children's books were also on the Nazis' "black list" and were banned from libraries and bookshops. Among them were all books by Erich Kästner except "Emil and the Detectives" as well as young adult novels by Lisa Tetzner and Alex Wedding.

Book burnings also took place on Königsplatz in Munich. Today, 10 May 1933 stands for the brutal persecution of Jewish and politically disagreeable authors. In the preparation for the anniversary, pupils will look into the lives and works of some of the banned and persecuted children's book authors and work together to create a staged performance.

Schools from Munich and the surrounding area are cordially invited to attend the performance on 11 May. Registration by phone (089)891211-0 and e-mail fuehrungen@ijb.de.

A cooperation of the International Youth Library Foundation and the Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism.
