Exhibition Opening

"Congratulations, dear Maria Friedrich!" On the 100th birthday of the founder and publisher of dtv junior

Jella-Lepman-Hall

By chance, she became a children's book publisher in 1971 and found her vocation in this profession: Maria Friedrich (1922-2012), founder of dtv junior, successfully shaped the dtv children's book programme for almost 20 years and set the tone with series such as dtv pocket, dtv Lebensbilder or dtv Schreibschrift.

One of Friedrich's heartfelt concerns was the promotion of young illustration. She taught students at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts in order to win them over to children's book illustration. Many of her students remained gratefully attached to her until the end of their lives, which is reflected in the extensive collection of prints and paintings she received as gifts on special occasions.

On the occasion of what would have been her 100th birthday, the International Youth Library is showing a selection of the most beautiful works from this collection in an anniversary exhibition and paying tribute to the publisher, teacher and collector with personal contributions from some of her companions, friends, pupils and family.

The opening of the exhibition will be held in German.
