Pirate – Treasure hunt – Reading

It regularly happens in Spanish-speaking countries that unknown children’s book authors rise to the top in book award competitions. This is the case for Spaniard Llanos Campos, whose debut received the coveted Premio El Barco de Vapor. The author helps herself to the rich treasure chest of adventure and pirate literature and movies – from “Treasure Island” to “Pirates of the Caribbean” – using various materials and motives and many original ideas to assemble an imaginative page-turner. Like in Stevenson’s tale, the narrator is a cabin boy. Chispas (Sparky), whose name underscores a lively temperament and a clever head, works on board the Cruz del Sur with the (in)famous pirate leader Barracuda – what’s in a name? – as they search to find a legendary treasure, which unexpectedly turns out to be a book. Of course: someone must be able to read it... In the end, there remain enough open questions for a sequel.
This is a quick-paced novel with a good dose of humour.
