News – Parody – ABC book – Picture book

One is tempted to call this ABC book by Paweł Mildner
(b. 1986) a child’s fun analogue to Twitter. Different birds from all across Poland chirp out news-of-the-day snippets, and readers leaf through, well, “notable” (strange, odd, absurd) reports that caricature typical human news reporting styles. Starting with current events from a place that begins with A, and ending with news from a place that begins with Z, children learn of the young chicks of Nowy Sącz and their love of reading and of the cursing bravado of Matylda in Słupsk, for instance, while also rehearsing their ABCs. To this are added wonderful, brightly incisive illustrations composed of three basic hues and filled with round faces and shapes, which Paweł Mildner weaves together into slap-stick scenes. “Ptakty” was published by the small, new, independent publishing house and graphic design studio Ładne Halo, which is run by a two-person team.
