Vilnius / History – City – Adventure
This is the second young adult book from Justinas Žilinskas (b. 1974), the writing, singing law professor of Mykolas Romeris University, and it is as great a success as his first. In “Mano Vilnius mano”, friends Aistė and Simas explore the Lithuanian capital. Žilinskas has written a true “rendezvous” with the city, an encounter with its history, with both its known and hidden places, its mysteries and its adventures. Buildings, streets, cobblestones and more are read as part of a symbolic code that, when deciphered, can reveal the city’s essence. The book itself is a clever combination of various elements, just as a code is. The main storyline focuses on Aistė and Simas and their exploration of the place and time of Vilnius, and is complemented by comics, illustrations, sketches and maps. “Mano Vilnius mano” was published by Aukso žuvys, a press founded in 2011, which is coming out with exciting new volumes like this one and infusing a breath of fresh air into Lithuanian children’s literature.
