Captivity – Freedom – Animal food –
This book from the young publishing house Minibombo, which produces challenging picture books for younger children, is intentionally laconic and full of surprises. Six pictures show differently coloured keys, which can open just as many cages, including those inhabited by a little mouse, a rabbit, a squirrel, a canary, a frog and a hedgehog, who – maybe – will live happy lives once freed. But outside the cages there lurk unforeseen dangers, including a snake that is ready to open its mouth and swallow some delicious prey. Readers can lift flaps to discover what is hidden from view at first glance, creating unexpected results. The book plays with the difference between the expected and the unexpected, as well as with simplicity and subtle irony. This helps awaken the curiosity of young readers and allows them to be astonished, while adults will enjoy accompanying them on this voyage of discovery. (Age: 3+)
