Grandfather / Grandson – Dementia – Death – Picture book
Lukia and Kosmas’s Grandpa isolates himself from family life more and more. He withdraws into his own world, where Grandma has a different name, where his pictures show the cloudy sky instead of the sea, and where he no longer sings for Lukia or dances with her. In the little girl’s dreams, concern for her grandfather mixes with happy memories of past times together. One day her grandfather takes off on his last journey. With passion and empathy, Argyro Pipini describes how the two children come to terms with their needs and double loss: the grandfather’s slow farewell to life and then eventually his death. In her first project as a book illustrator, Marilena Melissinou captures the two children’s distinctive emotions. Delicate details only hinted at paired with evocative colour contrasts emphasise the basic tone of the story. (Age: 6+)
