Freedom of expression – Freedom of artistic expression – Democracy

The reason why Klaus Humann was able to rally the crème de la crème of international artists and illustrators, was a serious incident: The book was created in reaction to the terrorist attack on the editorial staff of the satirical weekly magazine “Charlie Hebdo” in January 2015. It honours the victims and calls for tolerance. This is evident in the programmatic title: “Artists defend the freedom of expression”, in the idea to let all fees and proceeds got to the Writers in Prison committee of PEN International, in the astute introduction by journalist Andreas Platthaus, and in the individual contributions. Each of the almost thirty artists came up with their individual way of condemning the attack and advocating the freedom of expression for art. Some opt for veiled remarks or an unexpected punch line; some take the more didactic route, while others remain serious or reflective. (Age: 12+)
