Sam & Dave dig a hole

Adventure – Perseverance – Surprise –
Sam and Dave are on a mission: They dig a hole and are determined to discover “something spectacular”. Yet, no matter how deep or in which direction they shovel, there just isn’t anything spectacular to be found – at least according to Mac Barnett’s simple, straightforward text. Jon Klassen’s colour-pencil and digital illustrations in earthen tones, however, let the readers in on a secret: Buried deep in the earth, there are plenty of treasures; if only the two unlucky boys didn’t spectacularly miss all of them. In the end, the exhausted diggers fall asleep while their faithful little dog goes on digging and suddenly, Alice-in-Wonderland-like, they all tumble down, down, down and land back where they started… or maybe not. This second collaboration between the award-winning author-illustrator team has resulted in a hilarious and perfectly choreographed picture book with an open ending that leaves children ample space to puzzle over possible further adventures.
