How is a book actually made and who writes all the things in it? Asja Koleva’s picture book offers the right answer to these questions: It all starts with a writer thinking about a topic, followed by a writing process (on paper, on the computer, at home, outside, in the café), then on to handing in the manuscript to a publisher and editing it, and finally to the layout, printing and distribution of the book and on to possible translations. Koleva also reminds us that a book proliferates and conveys stories and ideas to many people, providing them with entertainment and also chances to reflect. “Kniga, kak se pravi” was nominated for the Bulgarian children’s jury award “Magic Pearls” in 2015. It is a wonderful example of the new picture book trend in Bulgaria, which relies on very little text and is being promulgated by a young generation of Bulgarian illustrators, to which graphic designer and “visual journalist” Koleva certainly belongs.
