Peace | War | Humanity | Democracy

The text of this book is a reprint of a rhyming story written by teacher and author Mario Lodi (1922-2014) and published in 1963. Lodi received many accolades for his work in the democratic school reform and for his defence of children’s rights. Revolutionary for its time, this story has lost none of its urgency.

This story denounces poverty, unemployment, and the pressure to emigrate. It describes a world in which the powerful hoard nearly all privilege and place all others on the outskirts of the system. The story declares war on injustices by showing how a little soldier’s conscience helps convert the violent uses of weapons into peaceful ones.

The book’s illustrations are by young illustrator Michele Rochetti, who uses a reflected and precise symbolism that alludes to Cubism and Futurism in a very personal and original way. (Age: 6+)
