Escape | Migration | Homeland

Chavel must flee to a foreign land. Everything the girl loves will be left behind. Her mother tells her she is allowed to take only one thing. Without a second thought, Chavel finds the red dress that Grandma gave her. Once settled in their new home, her mother tries in vain to persuade Chavel to put on something else. Every day the dress is washed, dried, and worn again.

In her characteristic manner, Daniela Stamatiadi evokes her protagonists’ emotions using carefully designed illustrations that inspire the reader’s own emotional responses, as when a subdued black-and-white patterned background is used to foreground the dress. Painted in a vivid red, the dress symbol ises warmth, intimacy, and its dominant role Chavel’s life. This book by frequent award winners Marina Michailidou-Kadi and Daniela Stamatiadi received third prize in the first international literary competition hosted by the organisation ≫To Chamogelo tou Paidiou.≪ (Age: 7+)
