Fear | Courage

Following ≫No Kind of Superman≪ and ≫Tree≪, ≫Parachute≪ is Danny Parker’s third picture book collaboration with multi-award-winning illustrator Matt Ottley. In this book, an anxious little boy only manages to brave the dangers of everyday life thanks to a bright yellowy-orange parachute that he wears wherever he ventures.

The short text describing Toby’s seemingly harmless undertakings – such as getting out of bed or climbing down from the breakfast stool – is given an adventurous twist through Ottley’s imaginative visual interpretations that show the scared boy’s point of view: In the digital oil and pastel illustrations in various sizes and formats, the zoo elephant suddenly looms threateningly over the boy, and his short bedside ladder shoots up above the clouds into an endless sky leaving him suspended in mid-air. However, aft er rescuing his cat from the tree house, Toby slowly but surely summons enough courage to face life without his parachute. (Age: 4+)
