Father | Superhero | Characteristics | Animal story

As its title suggests, this entertaining picture book is not only about superheroes in general but also about one very particular superhero – a young (animal) child’s father. Chris Owen’s witty and evocative rhymes boast of the speed, strength, audacity, and gracefulness that seem to come with a superhero’s job description. Each verse then culminates in the refrain in which the young narrator praises his or her hero’s even more important powers – such as giving hugs, singing songs, providing comfort, and reading books.

Moira Court’s colourful doublespread illustrations, executed in acrylics, charcoal, pastel, and pencil, add an element of surprise to the text by portraying not human but animal superheroes that perfectly fi t the description; thus a ≫muscly≪ brown bear with ≫handsome looks≪ – naturally wearing the obligatory superhero mask – is presented ≫catching crooks≪, i.e. rascally foxes. A small glossary at the back provides additional superhero facts for each animal included. (Age: 4+)
