of the surrealisic everyday life of a Russian family in post-Soviet times? The
sprightly stories, narrated by the youngest son, deal with school problems
and special tutoring, with house plants and marital problems, with UFOs,
extraterrestials and other strange visitors, with a burning tree and with a
mumified and now resurrected German soldier 
from World War II. The final story tells about 
the family dachshund »Whale« who accompanies the oldest son to military
service in the Pamirs 
and disappears across the border - but not really quite forever. The
bizarre, idiosyncratic illus-
trations are well-suited to the unconventional
