Old age – Tree – Friendliness – Usefulness
In a simple yet at the same time poetic way, this picture book links a
one-hundred-year-old woman with a three-hundred-year-old olive tree.
Friendly Aunt Zaiyūn, who lives in a little hut on a hill, is loved and
respected among the villagers. In terms of her experience, wisdom, and
constancy, she seems just like the gnarled old tree. Both were once fragile
plants and now so to speak stand at the heart of the town: the aunt, whom
people trust and share their feelings with in the safety of her hut, and the
tree, under whose sprawling branches people find shade and children play.
The colourful illustrations express the warmth of the feelings which the
villagers entertain towards Aunt Zaiyūn and the olive tree. (Age: 4+)
