Indian Ocean – Comoros – Cooking – Rice
Boumi is whimpering: she is so hungry! Her mood improves at once, however,
when the little girl hears familiar sounds from the kitchen. Her mother is
preparing a traditional rice cake. Boumi – with her nose over the pots – can
observe how the rice is first placed into water, then sieved and tamped down
multiple times, and worked into a yummy dough. With a clearly laid out
recipe and detailed cooking instructions for somewhat older children, the
book tells about the delicious traditional cooking of the island Mayotte,
which lies north-westerly of Madagascar. Fun clay figures made by Marie
Pinault populate Marc Jamet’s photo collages, into which amusing
onomatopoeic words are integrated. (Age: 2+)
