The world in miniature
The family in historic picture books and children's literature

We all have our own ideas of what is meant by family. But what was family life like 100 years ago?

The exhibition presents a panorama of historic family representations from a wide range of picture books and illustrated children’s literature, thereby also putting the present idea of family in a new light. The historic family illustrations encourage visitors of all ages to make comparisons between then and now.

For the exhibition, the International Youth Library has delved into its unique and abundant store of historical picture books and children’s literature from the late 18th to the early 20th century. The exhibition is accompanied by a series of lectures on various topics such as the links between past and present, with a particular focus on contemporary depictions of the family in stories for children and young people.
