All
Kinds of Families!
Images of Families in Contemporary Picture Books
Family life one hundred years ago was completely different than what
children experience today. The world and society have changed
dramatically, and following on the heels of these changes are the images
that are reflected in picture books. For example, when the picture book
“The Visitors Who Came to Stay” (“Mein Papi, nur meiner! oder: Besucher,
die zum Bleiben kamen) by Annalena McAfee and Anthony Browne (Alibaba,
1986) was awarded the German Youth Literature Prize in 1986, there was
an outcry from parents and educators. Are picture books supposed to
confront their readers with such harsh realities? Since that time,
however, there have been picture books which represent every type of
family constellation, including single parent-, blended-, or gay
families. And even within representations of “traditional” families,
there is a wide range, from cheerful and happy to chaotic to even
hopeless or marginalized families. The exhibit shows this variety of
current family images and is meant to stimulate discussion.
